Take Action Project (Culminating Activity)

The culminating activity has two components:  a research component and a media production component.

The Research Component

The assignment is to research one international issue that is relevant to Canadians and one which Canadians can do something about.  The task is to find information about the chosen topic - both giving some background to the topic as well as outlining the present issue - as well as presenting two or three ways that Canadians can be actively involved in changing or improving the present situation.

As a guideline, thee should be roughly three pages of notes:

first page - one page of notes on background information, taking information from at least two different sources

second page - one page of notes about the present situation, taking information from at least two different sources (and one source must be different from the first page sources)

third page - one page of notes on possible action Canadians can take, including contact information for groups or organizations involved in the issue (and one source must be different from the first and second page sources)

A bibliography will be handed in when the assignment is complete.

Some possible issues:

The crisis in Sudan

The crisis in Gaza

sweatshops

the war in Afghanistan

American soldiers seeking refugee status in Canada (for some sources of information, click here)

impact of globalization

water scarcity

global warming

nuclear weapons/arms trade

torture

false imprisonment/dettention

human rights (e.g. discrimination, freedom of expression)

Media Production Component

The media production component can be a news report, a public service announcement (PSA) in either video or audio format, an information poster, a newspaper or radio ad, or a 2 to 3 minute documentary.

Rubrics for the assignment can be found here.

Important Note:  This assignment is the culminating activity and, therefore, is worth 30% of the final mark.  The research component will be worth 60% of the assignment's grade and the media component 40%.
