- Act One, Scene Two, lines 1-31 (Lord Capulet, Paris)
- Act Three, Scene Five, lines 142-205 (Lord Capulet, Lady Capulet, Juliet, Nurse)
- Act One, Scene Five, lines 93-110 (Romeo, Juliet)
Analyzing Characters and their Relationships
Choosing one of the characters from the scene answer the following questions:
- What kind of person is your character? What evidence for this did you find?
- What is your character trying to do in this scene?
- What type of relationship does your character have with other characters in this scene?
Poetic Elements
- What rhyme appears, if any? Where? What is its purpose?
- Which characters speak in rhyme?
- Which characters speak in blank verse (iambic parameter, unrhymed)?
- In your opinion, what word choice is particularly effective?
- What imagery enhances the expression?
- Where has Shakespeare used poetic devices, such as simile, metaphor, personification, symbol, allusion, alliteration, and repetition? What is the effect of these poetic devices?
Reading
Prepare to perform a passage from the scene as the character assigned to those lines.
The scene study should be completed by Thursday, April 9.
