There are several components to this assignment.
1) An oral presentation (30%) Rubric is here.
The presentation should include:
· a brief summary of each book
· a description of the main themes of each book
· what is the genre of the book (for both books)
· who wrote the book and a brief biography of the author (for both books)
· what you thought of the book and whether it is a book you would recommend to
someone one (for both books)
· an explanation of the media creation
2) (a) A book report (see attached sheet) discussing this question: which novel best reflects the teenage experience? Give examples from both texts. (b) Prepare a book review of one of the novels. It may be a book review in a format suitable for a newspaper or magazine, or written as a letter to an editor, a librarian, or an interested reader (approximately one typed page in length). Rubric is here.(20%)
3) For both books: Journal entries responding to the reading. It is a journal of notes on the reading. Entries could include your reaction to the characters, plot, setting, themes, symbols, and writing style. Should this book be considered a classic? Are the story and/or characters believable? Only three entries need to be included in the ISU Portfolio. Rubric is here. (20%)
4) A media creation (30%)
You are being asked to develop a media representation of one theme from one of the books. Media creations could include a Shadow Box (three dimensional collage), videotaped performance of a scene of a play, parody, promotional poster for the selected literature, movie trailer for a film version of the work of literature, original painting, or musical composition. I would recommend a CD soundtrack for the novel, which could include a mixture of original and prerecorded tracks. The media work should also include a rationale for how it is related to the chosen theme from the novel. Feel free to make your own suggestion about possible creations. The rubric can be found here.
