Short Stories and the Novel

 

 

Part One:  Introduction to Effective Reading and Writing

You have 3 assignments to complete in this section:

  • maintaining a vocabulary log
  • reading and responding to Alice Munro's "Boys and Girls" (short story); making predictions during your reading of the story and completing a plot diagram of the story when you have finished reading it
  • write a description of the writing process (after completing the writing process reading assignment)

 

PART ONE SHOULD BE COMPLETED AND HANDED IN BY:  SEPTEMBER 21st

 

 

 

Part Two:  Using Themes for Effective Writing

You have 5 assignments to complete in this section:

  • complete the writer's toolbox assignment (pages 2 and 3 of the handout)
  • completing research questions on unemployment (pages 5 to 10 of the handout).  A good source of information is Statistics Canada.  For articles on unemployment, click here, here, and here.
  • reading and responding to Robert Currie's "Casual Labour" (short story); completing a mind map and collage of the story's main theme. (see pages 16 to 18 of the handout)  
  • write a description of the writing process (after completing the writing process reading assignment)
  • complete the assignment on Robert Frost's "The Death of the Hired Man" (poem) (pages 19 and 20 of the handout)

 

PART TWO SHOULD BE COMPLETED AND HANDED IN BY:  SEPTEMBER 24th

 

 

 

Part Three:  The Author and Writing

You have 4 assignments to complete in this section:

  • Writing project:  Think of a time when you felt as though you were alone and without friends.  How did you feel?  What brought your loneliness to an end?
  • Read "The Creative Writing Process:  Using Prior Knowledge" (pages 2 and 3 of the handout)
  • reading and responding to excerpt from "Anne of Green Gables" (novel); answer the questions that follow the reading (but not question #7) and the questions found on pages 13 through 16 of the handout.
  • complete the assignments for Being With Henry, found on pages 18 to 20 in the handout.
  • complete the assignment on Dorothy Livesay's "Friday's Child" (poem) (pages 21 and 22 of the handout)

 

PART THREE SHOULD BE COMPLETED AND HANDED IN BY:  SEPTEMBER 30th

 

 

 

Part Four:  Character and Setting

You have 4 assignments to complete in this section:

  • Writing project:  Think of a spot where you would like to go for a vacation.  It could be a fantasy spot, or it could be a real place, like Paris or Hawaii.  In at least half a page, describe your dream vacation spot in detail.  before you begin, jot down your main ideas in point form.
  • Read and complete the assignments on "Setting" and "Character" (pages 4 to 12 of the handout)
  • read about "Linking Paragraphs" (pages 12 to 15 of the handout)
  • complete the assignment for Being With Henry, found on pages 15 and 16 in the handout. 

 

PART FOUR SHOULD BE COMPLETED AND HANDED IN BY:  OCTOBER 6th

 

 

 

Part Five:  Point of View and Writing Your Own Story

You have 3 assignments to complete in this section:

  • Read "Point of View" and complete the assignment found on page 5 of the handout.
  • complete the assignments for Being With Henry, found on pages 6 through 11 in the handout.
  • complete the writing assignment found on page 12 of the handout. This is a significant writing assignment - an 8- to 10-page story.

 

PART FIVE SHOULD BE COMPLETED AND HANDED IN BY:  OCTOBER 14th
