Grade 9 English (ENG1D1)
This course emphasizes analytic reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary school academic programs and their daily lives. Students will study and interpret texts from contemporary and historical periods, including plays, short stories, and short essays, and will investigate and create media works. An important focus will be the correct and effective use of spoken and written language.

The final grade will be assessed using the following formula:

More detailed information will be provided about the individual assignments in the days to follow. Assignments will include: a persuasive essay, a literary essay, a research report, a media presentation, an oral presentation, review, and a narrative work. There will be tests on: each text studied (the novel and the play); language and writing tools; and elements of poetry. The summative assignment will be a research project into a theme or topic touched on in the course and can be presented in a number of different ways. The project will be agreed upon by the teacher and the student.
